Submissions - Writers

What We Accept

  • Flash fiction - anywhere between 250 and 1000 words
  • Short stories - anywhere between 1000 and 3500 words
  • Narrative creative non-fiction - anywhere between 1000 and 3500 words

What We Don't Accept

  • Scripts - we believe scripts are best served by being performed rather than appearing in print
  • Poetry - currently, we do not feel best suited to make editorial decisions on poems
  • Extracts from longer works - all submissions must be self-contained, and be able to stand on their own
  • Picture books - we include our own artwork with some stories. If you'd like to have your own artwork appear alongide your story, please say in your email, but don't send us examples.

What We Might Accept

  • Prose poetry - the lines are often blurred with prose poetry, so we won't know if it's suitable for us without reading it
  • Experimental fiction - as above, we don't know if it's for us without reading it

Submission Periods

November to January - Unthemed

Submissions received between November and January go towards one of our two yearly unthemed issues. This means that we accept all submissions (as long as they comply with our guidelines above). Stories selected for publication during this period will be published 20th March.

February to April - Themed

Submissions received during these dates go towards our themed issue - for 2018, our theme is Underdog. Those submissions that do not comply will still be read, but if accepted, will be published in the next unthemed issue. Stories selected for publication in our themed issue will be published 20th June.

May to July - Unthemed

Submissions received between May and July go towards one of our two yearly unthemed issues. This means that we accept all submissions (as long as they comply with our guidelines above). Stories selected for publication during this period will be published 20th September.

August to October - Restricted

In keeping with our company goals and acting on feedback given, we will only accept submissions during this period from writers in education, and writers who are unpublished. Those submissions that do not comply will still be read, but if accepted, will be published in the next unthemed issue. Stories selected for publication in our restricted issue will be published 20th December. You can find a little more information here.

Submission Guidelines

All submissions to be sent to submissions@banditfiction.co.uk. We do not accept paper submissions.

Documents should be attached the email as a .doc or .docx file, and not a .pdf. Please title your attachment as the name of your story.

Your name, as well as any personally identifiable content, should appear nowhere on the document - neither in the file name or the content.

Should be in English, and formatting for British publication. This means British spellings (colour rather than color, for example).

In the body of your email, please include a little bit about your submission - what genre is it? What age is it targeted at? Are there any similar stories currently out there?

If possible, try to address your submission to a specific one of us. Information about our tastes can be found on The Team page.

We reserve the right to reject, unread and without reply, submissions that ignore our guidelines
